Watertown, NY | Melissa + Ken are Engaged!

It’s always an honor (and perhaps a bit nerve-wrecking!) when a fellow photographer connects with and hires us! We instantly have some things in common, so small talk quickly becomes large talk; but more importantly, in this case, Melissa had tons of awesome ideas and inspiration to share!

After taking a tour of the wedding location and getting an idea of Melissa’s plan for the  flow of things on their big day (coming this August!), we met the cute couple in downtown Watertown. Melissa had several locations picked out to share with us, which instantly got us inspired and excited. Melissa works downtown and explained that she loves to visit the local shops within walking distance to support the local economy. She first took us to Thifted, her favorite second-hand store with an awesome section just for vinyl! Ken is a musician and they share a love of music, so it was the perfect place for a few shots to get the session started.

The weather was exceptional, so we were able to walk to the place where Melissa and Ken first met!! The Paddock Club is a classy, moody joint, and they were super nice to let us in to take a few photos of Melissa and Ken while they reminisced about the first time they laid eyes on each other. It’s located in the second oldest covered mall in America, Paddock Arcade. It was clear to us that Melissa takes a true interest in the history of where she lives. She filled us in on the Paddock Arcade and it made the location come to life in an a new way! She also brought a little of her home-sake, NYC, to the shoot with one of her adorable dresses. It displays an art-deco NYC cityscape! A friend and local business owner helped Melissa find ultra cute and flattering dresses for the session at her shop, Strut Boutique.

Melissa and Ken zipped home to pick up their pups, and we took a short walk to the gardens of Jefferson County Historical Society Museum. Once they returned with Trinity and Dahlia, Melissa set up a cute picnic in the gardens. She surprised Ken with a few mementos of their relationship and a sweet memory of his grandma, which allowed for some awesome emotions to capture!

We capped things off at Melissa’s adorable Free Lil Library – a project she put her heart into. Ken knows just how special the lil Library is to her. One day, he tricked her into thinking something was wrong with it, so she’d go check it out. There really wasn’t anything wrong – just a beautiful engagement ring waiting for her inside – and that’s how their journey into marriage began! So sweet!

SHP had so much fun bonding with Melissa and Ken. We even went for wings after the session! We cannot stress enough how important engagement sessions are to the wedding photography process. Getting to know your photographer before the big day can definitely help ease some jitters!
